Special Duties & Responsibilities
- Removes standing water from fields.
- Cuts grass and operates string trimmers.
- Polices parks, green spaces, and athletic fields and picks up trash and debris; rakes leaves.
- Empties trash receptacles.
- Supervises athletic events.
- Cleans shelters, grills, and restrooms; replaces paper supplies as necessary.
- Loads and unloads materials by hand from vehicles.
- Secures park at closing time.
Minimum Training & Experience
- Some experience in grounds maintenance is required.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Special Requirements
- Knowledge of basic groundskeeping practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of hazards and applicable safety requirements of the area of assignment, equipment, and machines used.
- Knowledge of and is able to use equipment, materials, and tools used in the maintenance trade.
- Knowledge of the use of mowers, pruners, and other grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
- Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
- Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.
- Ability to read manuals, forms, etc.
- Ability to prepare reports, using a prescribed format.
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
- Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; understand and apply the theories of geometry.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
- Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully.
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including, lawnmowers, rakes, power and hand tools, computers, etc.
- Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.
- Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
- Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately using power and hand tools.
- Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as hand tools and janitorial equipment.
- Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
- Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.)
- Must be able to communicate via telephone.
