About the role

The Correctional Litigation Section is seeking a Paralegal Manager to supervise a team of five paralegals. This individual will provide legal support to the Section Chief and Assistant Attorneys General in defending claims against the Commonwealth and client agencies, including the Virginia Department of Corrections, the Virginia Parole Board, and the Department of Juvenile Justice. The Paralegal Manager will carry a full litigation caseload while overseeing the team’s work.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal support to the Correctional Litigation Section Chief and Assistant Attorneys General in defending claims against the Commonwealth and client agencies.
  • Manage and supervise the Correctional Litigation Section Paralegals, including reviewing and approving leave requests and timesheets, preparing evaluations, and acting as a liaison between paralegals and administrative staff on personnel matters.
  • Perform paralegal duties, including:
    • Initial investigative review of claims filed against the Commonwealth and client agencies.
    • Prompt collection of materials related to claims, interviewing witnesses, and preparing drafts of legal documents and memoranda for attorney review.
    • Organizing, cataloging, and controlling client materials, including large volumes of audio and video files.
    • Assisting in all phases of discovery, including planning, strategy development, and retaining e-discovery service providers as needed.
    • Responding to third-party subpoenas.
    • Assisting in trial preparation.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of paralegal experience in Correctional Litigation.
  • Knowledge of the Virginia Department of Corrections and federal civil litigation.
  • Familiarity with legal terminology and paralegal functions.
  • Ability to identify, collect, review, and organize materials from multiple sources.
  • Excellent time management and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrate collegiality, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and elicit team members’ best work.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or paralegal certification preferred.

Pay

$100,000 (Hiring Range)
