Paralegal, Correctional Litigation

State Role Title: Paralegal | Hiring Range: $55,000-$75,000 | Pay Band: UG

About the Role

This position works in a varied capacity and supports division attorneys by performing initial investigative review of claims filed against the Commonwealth and client agencies, including the Virginia Department of Corrections, the Virginia Parole Board, and the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Responsibilities

• Conduct witness interviews
• Prepare drafts of legal documents and memoranda for attorney review
• Maintain document and file control
• Gather relevant documents and video footage, including review and analysis of video footage and audio recordings
• Assist in all phases of discovery and work with attorneys to handle electronic discovery
• Assist in trial preparation

Requirements

• Competent working knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures
• Excellent written communication skills, as demonstrated in a writing sample (no page length requirement)
• Exceptional verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational skills and proficiency in time management
• Ability to work independently and as a team member
• Ability to organize and analyze large quantities of written and verbal information
• Ability to work well under pressure and adjust priorities without close supervision
• Litigation experience is required
• Basic word processing skills

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or Paralegal Certificate is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the required qualifications may substitute for educational criteria
• Experience with Microsoft Word and E-Discovery is a plus
