Overnight Veterinary Assistant - Emergency

About the role

BluePearl Pet Hospital in Midtown, NYC is seeking a compassionate and experienced Overnight ER Veterinary Assistant to join our team!

Schedule

Thursday - Saturday, 7pm - 7am

Pay

$22.50 - $32.80 / hour + competitive shift differentials

• Dependent on experience and advancement through our competency assessment tool.
• Shift Differential Pay for Nights and Weekends.
• Based on a 4-hour minimum.
• Mon – Fri: 6pm to 8am = +$4.50/hr.
• Sat & Sun: 8am to 6pm = +$4.50/hr.
• Sat & Sun: 6pm to 8am = +$8.00/hr.

Responsibilities

• Triage emergency cases as they come in and assist DVM with crafting and going over estimates as needed.
• Perform diagnostics (radiographs, labwork, etc).
• Set up patients in ICU or Inpatient ward.
• Discharge patients.
• Handle client communication.
• Assist with nursing care to patients according to hospital standards of care and core values.
• Stock, clean, and maintain cleanliness in ER, ICU, and other designated areas.
• Understand classification of commonly used medications, associated side effects, and monitor therapeutic response.
• Administer medications via appropriate routes and duration under the guidance of an LVT.
• Perform radiography and lab work.
• Perform physical exams; accurately count heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
• Engage with clients by performing triages, going over estimates, and providing discharge instruction.
• Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.

Qualifications

• Compassionate and experienced in emergency veterinary care.
• Current licensure and VTNE certification.
• Knowledge of commonly used medications and their side effects.
• Ability to perform physical exams and monitor vital signs.
• Experience with triaging and communicating with clients.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Passion for emergency veterinary care and a commitment to patient care.

Skills

• Basic knowledge of veterinary pharmacology.
• Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques.
