Sierra Donor Services (SDS) is a designated organ procurement organization (OPO) within New Mexico and part of the DCI Donor Services family. For over four decades, we’ve led efforts to end the transplant waiting list through nationwide donation, transplantation, and distribution of organs and tissues while maintaining close ties to local communities. Our mission is to save lives through organ and tissue donation, measured by how we serve donor families and recipients.

About the role

As an Organ Recovery Coordinator (ORC), you’ll use your nursing background to oversee the process of procuring the gift of organ donation. In collaboration with clinical teams, you’ll assess organ compatibility for recipients, expedite surgical and technical processes, and ensure organs are packaged and transferred quickly and safely. This role offers a higher level of autonomy while providing a lifeline to those awaiting transplants.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates patient suitability for organ donation by reviewing medical records and consulting with medical staff.
  • Coordinates organ placement and allocation with transplant programs and surgeons.
  • Manages surgical recovery of organs and peri-operative logistics, including transportation, surgical packaging, and lab specimen preparation.
  • Provides support to donor families and conducts medical/social history interviews.
  • Updates donor information in electronic medical records.
  • Minimum availability of 15 days of call per month; incentives available for additional availability.

Requirements

  • Two or more years of experience in a critical care setting (ICU or equivalent).
  • Registered Nursing (RN) license.
  • Valid Driver’s License with ability to pass MVR underwriting requirements.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and multitask.
  • Exceptional teamwork, interpersonal, communication, and conflict management skills.
  • Flexibility to work day/night shifts, weekends, and holidays based on organizational needs.
  • First dose of COVID-19 vaccine required by start date or proof of vaccination.
