In-house Organ Recovery Coordinator (Critical Care RNs Desired!)

About the role

The In-house Organ Recovery Coordinator provides support for organ donation activities within assigned facilities to maximize opportunities for organ donation. This role ensures excellent donor evaluation, management, and organ yield while working with potential donor families, hospital personnel, and transplant hospitals to facilitate efficient recovery of organs and tissues for transplantation. Extensive on-call services, flexibility, and a significant daily presence in the assigned hospital are required. The position collaborates with medical, nursing, and other departments to plan, implement, and evaluate educational and quality assurance programs related to donation, and assists with public education and outreach projects.

Responsibilities

• Performs daily responsibilities to meet the needs of potential donors, donor families, hospital personnel, physicians, and the OPO.
• Provides rapid on-site response to referrals, primarily in the assigned facility, with flexibility to assume responsibilities outside the primary area as needed.
• Evaluates potential donors and assesses donor families, obtains authorization for donation, conducts Medical/Social History interviews, and assists families through end-of-life decisions.
• Manages medical care of donors prior to recovery activities and directs the placement of anatomical gifts.
• Provides transplant surgeons with information necessary to determine appropriate recipients and coordinates organ placement/allocation with transplant programs and surgeons.
• Coordinates and assists in the surgical recovery of organs and perioperative management of the donor, including arranging transportation for organ recovery teams.
• Manages lab specimens for shipment and delivery in accordance with established policies.
• Supports the Hospital Development Coordinator by identifying formal and informal leaders, assessing their roles, and collaborating to improve donation processes.
• Assists in policy and procedure development and serves as an expert clinical resource for the hospital regarding organ and tissue donation.
• Participates in hospital committees influencing organ donation, promoting donation, and seeking collaboration opportunities.
• Facilitates the donation process and maintains high visibility in critical care units as the designated resource for donation-related issues.
• Provides donor and referral follow-up to hospital staff and develops, delivers, and evaluates in-house training programs on donation processes.
• Documents hospital activities, updates plans and goals, and reports donation outcome data to hospital staff.

Requirements

• Education: RN, PA, or related healthcare degree/licensure, or OPO experience commensurate with job requirements.
• Experience: Minimum one to two years as a Donation Coordinator or Organ Recovery Coordinator.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass MVR underwriting requirements; may require use of a privately owned vehicle.
• Working knowledge of computers and basic data entry skills.
• Must be able to stand for more than eight hours a day, lift and carry containers up to 70 lbs, and work under stress with interruptions and changing priorities.
• First dose of COVID-19 vaccine required by potential start date or proof of vaccination.
