About the role

The Assistant Professor (Clinical Faculty Appointment) provides expert clinical care to patients, participates in translational and/or clinical research, and teaches fellows, residents, and students. This faculty position reports to the Chair of the Department of Hospital Medicine within the Division of Internal Medicine.

The role focuses primarily on inpatient service, including nocturnal shifts, and requires strong communication skills to interact with patients, families, staff, and faculty. The Assistant Professor will offer clinical expertise in patient care management and create an appropriate teaching environment in Onco-Hospitalist Medicine.

The position demands full ambulatory capability, excellent manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and visual and auditory acuity. Emotional and psychological stability is essential to manage patients and families compassionately. The Assistant Professor will also participate in developing clinical research studies, conduct patient evaluations, initiate referrals, and perform standard clinical procedures.

Responsibilities

• Provide exemplary clinical care in alignment with standards set by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Physicians.
• Conduct thorough history and physical examinations, and perform invasive procedures as required by the specialty.
• Develop and maintain a clinical practice for patients referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
• Provide physician staffing for the Department of Hospital Medicine consistent with other internists of similar training and experience.
• Review and approve ICD-9 and CPT coding for charge documents within 5 working days.
• Complete patient documentation within institutional time frames, including clear and concise dictation.
• Correspond with physicians regarding patient care and treatment via written or telephone communication.
• Stay current with clinical approaches through continuing education conferences.
• Request consultations for patients through written or verbal communication.
• Serve as a role model for faculty, fellows, residents, and students.
• Provide peer review for assessing clinical practice within the Department.
• Participate in institutional and hospital committees, attending meetings and providing feedback.
• Engage in collaborative research and scholarly activities to enhance the Department’s academic environment.
• Develop clinical research programs and scholarly activities aligned with Department goals.
• Seek funding mechanisms to support clinical research, including grant applications and budget development.
• Initiate education activities, including mentoring.
• Represent the Department of Hospital Medicine at local, regional, state, and national levels in Onco-Hospitalist Medicine.
• Travel to external sites, disseminating information to colleagues upon return.

Requirements

• Doctorate-level degree (M.D. or equivalent) from an accredited medical school.
• Completion of residency training in an approved American Residency Program or equivalent.
• Application and acceptance by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
• Licensed to practice medicine in Texas.
• Board certified in Internal Medicine or eligible for certification within 3 years of employment.
• At least 2 years of experience as an Instructor or 5 years post-degree with a combination of clinical, clinical scientist, or GME trainee experience.
