Nursing Department Assistant (NDA) III - Geriatric Psych

As a Nursing Department Assistant in the Geriatric Psych Unit, you will support the unique mental health needs of patients ages 55 and older, helping them achieve healthier and more productive lives through evaluation, treatment, and stabilization.

Responsibilities

• Provide for patients’ daily living activities.
• Maintain supplies and equipment function.
• Transport patients and complete errands.
• Assist in direct patient care tasks (e.g., perform EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, specimen collection, dressing changes, colostomy care, and document vital signs) under RN direction.
• Collaborate with healthcare teams to promote patient care delivery.
• Organize patient care assignments to ensure timely completion.
• Document care in patient records and label specimens properly.
• Assess and report patient pain to RN/LPN using a pain scale.
• Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of the unit, including patient areas and equipment.
• Prepare rooms for patient admissions and keep areas neat and uncluttered.
• Clean and maintain patient/unit equipment (e.g., over-bed tables, bed pans, bedside commodes).
• Report equipment, supply, or maintenance issues.
• Conduct hourly patient rounds to ensure safety measures (e.g., side rails, bed position, call lights, restraints).
• Ensure bed alarms are activated during hourly rounds.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (must be obtained within the new hire period).
• Basic math and multitasking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) certification.
• Previous nursing assistant experience.
• Healthcare or nursing home experience.
• Two years of experience in behavioral health or a medical background.

Physical Requirements

• Full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
• Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, reaching, squatting, bending/stooping, and lifting patients.
• Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
• Ability to work under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
• Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
• Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects (physical demands exceed those for Light Work).

Personal Protective Equipment

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
