Nursing Assistant-Inpatient Care

About the role

The Nursing Assistant-Med-Surg/Tele 6S position at Robley Rex VA Healthcare System in Louisville, Kentucky is seeking individuals with the necessary qualifications to provide patient care.

Responsibilities

• Answer call lights promptly and take appropriate actions
• Makes occupied beds and empty beds
• Administers therapeutic bath and soaks
• Provides care for patients in isolation
• Provides instruction to visitors in protective procedures and use of personal protective equipment
• Sets up and administers oxygen and postural drainage as instructed
• Performs urinary catheterization care and applies external urinary devices as directed
• Auxiliary in inserting urinary catheters following CAUTI procedures and straight caths
• Auxiliary in administering of enemas and suppositories with supervision
• Auxiliary in emergency situations, including cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, seizures, Heimlich maneuver, and hemorrhaging
• Performs post-mortem care and assists in support of the family members as needed
• Reports and records care given and changes noted in patients' condition to the supervising RN/Charge Nurse or Team Leader
• Auxiliary in the admission process of patients
• Shares responsibility with staff and completes hourly observation rounds on patients
• Attends Prevention and Management of Disturbed Behavior training as required
• Participates as a member of the Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT)
• Maintains consistent, courteous relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and patients
• Maintains constant observation of patients during off-unit escorts per service protocol
• Provides emotional support to seriously ill and terminally ill patients and their family members
• Performs unit-based testing including breathalyzer, blood glucose testing per service protocol
• Works three twelve-hour shifts weekly (7:30pm-8:00am), one eight-hour shift every other week, rotating weekends and holidays

• Experience or Education/Training meeting the qualifications outlined in the job description

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic requirements and demonstrate the following KSAs:

• Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents
• Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner
• Ability to properly use equipment, materials, and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families, and other health professionals

Pay

The pay for this position is competitive and may increase based on higher qualifications or special needs of the VA.

Schedule

The schedule for this position is three twelve-hour shifts weekly (7:30pm-8:00am), one eight-hour shift every other week, rotating weekends and holidays.
