Nursing Assistant I

About the Role

The Nursing Assistant (NA) I is a key member of the nursing care team, assisting with direct and indirect patient care within their scope of practice. This role supports patients, nursing, and medical care teams, collaborating under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The NA shares accountability for the quality of patient outcomes. In select departments, the role may also include clerical support functions such as phone answering, filing, and computer data entry.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct and non-direct patient care, including:
  • Activity of Daily Living (ADL) Care:
    • Oral care, bathing, showering, shaving, hair washing and maintenance, incontinence care, and toileting/elimination needs.
    • Changing bed linen and maintaining a decluttered patient care area.
    • Understanding and utilizing available products for patient care.
  • Safety and Preventative Care:
    • Infection prevention, skin and pressure injury prevention, and fall prevention.
    • Setting and responding to patient safety alarms.
    • Ensuring environmental safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Patient Mobility:
    • Patient turning, offloading, ambulation, and range of motion.
    • Understanding and using patient mobility assist devices and lift equipment per Safe Patient Handling (SPH) policy.
  • Nutrition:
    • Assisting with meal tray delivery, collection, and documentation of food consumption.
    • Setting up and assisting patients with meals, including feeding.
• Performs patient data collection, including:
  • Using data collection equipment such as vital signs, EKG, bladder scan, transfer devices, telemetry, and Massimo.
  • Documenting in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR): vital signs, height and weight, intake and output measurement (including drains, urinary catheter, and suction devices), essential care performed, and intentional rounding.
• Provides direct patient monitoring, including:
  • Safety Attendant (SA) at bedside for prevention of unintentional or intentional (suicide precautions) self-harm.
  • Video surveillance.
• Performs patient care interventions as delegated and within scope of practice, including:
  • Phlebotomy, EKGs, specimen collection, blood glucose measurement, and telemetry.
  • Preparing patient rooms for admissions and discharges, updating whiteboards, and stocking unit/room supplies.
  • Caring for patients with invasive lines and devices within NA scope of practice.
  • Transporting patients on/off unit and responding to emergency situations.
  • Unit-specific or patient population-specific interventions (e.g., psychiatry or pediatric patients).
• Communicates effectively with the nursing and healthcare team, including:
  • Reporting out-of-range patient data values to the covering RN.
  • Recognizing and reporting patient changes to the covering RN.
  • Performing shift reports with oncoming staff.
• Delivers excellent customer service by:
  • Relating to and respecting each patient individually.
  • Meeting the cognitive, physical, emotional, and personal preference needs of each patient, including cultural and religious beliefs.
• Performs other duties as requested by the healthcare and leadership team, within the scope of practice.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (preferred).
• BLS certification within 6 months of hire date (required).

Physical Requirements

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

• Occasional: balancing, climbing, crouching, typing/clerical/dexterity, kneeling, repetitive motion.
• Frequent: grasping, hearing, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, seeing/monitor/computer use, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity (color, depth, perception), walking.
• Constant: fit testing.

Hazards:

• Occasional: burns, chemical, electrical.
• Frequent: bodily fluids/bloodborne exposure.

Working Conditions:

• Occasional: noise, wet and/or humid conditions, dust, gases, mists, odors.

No travel required.

Pay

Salary is based on qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards.

Pay Range: $17.67 - $26.50 per hour.
