Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides professional and operational supervision to Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses.
- Oversees hiring, training, supervision, performance management, and professional development of assigned staff.
- Ensures that staff receive a comprehensive departmental orientation and training, assists with assigning preceptors of new nursing staff in alignment with the Nurse Educator.
- Ensures that staff receive sufficient initial and ongoing training on the full range of their job responsibilities.
- Counsels and mentors staff through regular performance evaluations and ongoing feedback.
- Makes employment-related decisions regarding assigned staff within the scope of defined authority as a supervisor following established organizational and departmental guidelines.
- Maintains accountability for completion of assigned nursing duties and clinic operational tasks.
- Reports operational or staffing concerns to the Nurse Manager and meets regularly for operational planning.
- Serves as a liaison between nursing staff and other members of the clinical team.
- Supports team-based care initiatives and nursing workflow improvements.
Oversee Daily Nursing Operations
- Develops and disseminates daily nursing work and coverage schedules, coordinates opening and closing nurse assignments, and adjusts staffing assignments as needed to support clinic operations.
- Reviews and approves routine nurse PTO requests while ensuring adequate staffing coverage and escalating complex scheduling conflicts to the Nurse Manager.
- Captures and manages in-basket messages, triage support, and clinical nursing responsibilities.
- Ensures staff coverage for clinic readiness tasks including temperature monitoring and huddles.
Support Clinical Operations
- Steps into direct patient care roles and nursing tasks, as staffing requires, modeling best practices and reinforcing team support.
- Oversees medication and vaccine inventory systems to ensure adequate supply levels.
- Places timely orders for medications and vaccines to maintain appropriate stock.
- Maintains organized medication and vaccine backstock storage.
- Ensures inventory management practices align with budgetary guidelines under the oversight of the Nurse Manager.
Ensure Quality Health Care Delivery
- Assists the Nurse Manager with implementation of quality improvement initiatives involving nurse workflows.
- Ensures patient care areas are maintained in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
- Ensures compliance with clinical safety standards including infection control and other regulatory requirements.
- Facilitates communication between nursing staff and other departments to support coordinated patient care.
- Works closely with Provider Leads, Infection Prevention Team, Nurse Educator, MA Supervisors and Leads and Practice Managers for efficient coordination of clinic needs.
- Provides direct patient care as needed to effectively and efficiently manage patient flow, walk-ins, and incoming telephone, portal, and in-basket messages.
- Promotes delivery of excellent patient-centered customer service.
Educational/In-service
- Maintains and enhances professional nursing skills.
- Participates in organizational meetings, committees, or work groups as assigned.
- Supports ongoing staff education and competency development.
Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Licensure: Current Massachusetts RN or LPN license.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in an outpatient or ambulatory care setting.
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to use independent judgment to make decisions within the scope of authority as a supervisor.
- Charge Nurse or equivalent leadership experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least five years of outpatient clinical nursing experience.
- At least two years of supervisory or leadership experience in healthcare.
