Nurse Practitioner- Psychiatric Mental Health

Duties

• The incumbent practices in Mental Health services as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide a full range of services in a variety of settings - emphasizing quality - timeliness - and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission.
• The PMHNP provides advanced clinical practice - consultation - and management.
• These skills enable the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) to anticipate and implement preventive health measures with a strong emphasis on patient/significant other/family education as well as illness management of mental health care/specialty care.
• The PMHNP practices to the full extent of their education - training - and certification.
• Core functions are outlined in the clinical privileges that correspond with this position.
• The PMHNP has prescriptive authority - if required - as indicated by their position.
• All Nurse Practitioners assigned to Mental Health Service will meet basic requirements and hold a degree of Master's level or higher from an accredited university.
• The Nurse Practitioner will establish and maintain professional relationships within Mental Health Service and with other services within the medical center.
• Uses advanced clinical judgment to independently provide evidence-based treatment to Veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including use of psychotropic medications - psychotherapy - and other modalities.
• Provides patient and family education on medical/mental health conditions - preventive measures - and prescribed treatments.
• Demonstrates leadership and engages in collaboration with other mental health and specialty care professionals while involving Veterans and their families (as appropriate) - in treatment plan development.
• Affirms and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
• Counsels and treats patients with substance use disorders.
• Orders and interprets diagnostic studies.
• Initiates referrals/consults to specialty services.

Qualifications

• Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification.
• 2+ years of practice as psychiatric NP.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
