Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant

About the role
The Nurse Practitioner utilizes the medical model to meet a variety of healthcare needs with ambulatory care as their primary focus in a correctional environment. The Physician Assistant works with healthcare professionals and security officers to provide basic medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician.
Responsibilities
- Respond to and initiate care for medical emergencies throughout the facility.
- Identify patient health problems and prescribe treatment under the direction of a physician.
- Implement medical care utilizing therapeutic regimens approved by a physician.
- Provide education to inmate/patient, healthcare staff, and correctional staff.
- Document all healthcare contacts.
- Adhere to safety and security policies and participate in disaster drills.
- Follow security regulations for keys, sharps, and controlled medications.
- Delegate to and supervise other team members as appropriate.
- Adhere to Universal Precautions and other appropriate infection control practices.
- Attend training and meetings as required.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited college/university NP/PA program.
- Current licenses or certifications in the state of employment.
- Experience in correctional healthcare desired but not required.
- Maintain required annual licensure and credentialing for physician assistants/nurse practitioners.
