Purpose of Position
The NP/PA will work with the Inpatient Cardiovascular Medicine Service within the Cardiovascular Division of the Department of Medicine. This NP/PA will assist the attending cardiologists in all areas of patient care in the Cardiovascular Medicine Service. Rotation and call schedules will be determined by patient need and may include both nighttime on-call responsibilities and weekend coverage.
Description
Cardiology Service responsibilities:
- Provide Cardiology services as required for patients at the Hospital, all without regard to source of payment.
- Assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Cardiology and related services provided at the Hospital.
- Obtain and coordinate the following general items: history and physical, laboratory results, charting of clinical findings, admissions orders, nursing instructions and other required elements.
- Works closely and cooperatively with the Hospital and the Cardiologists and other providers on the Hospital’s Medical Staff in clinically integrating the Hospital’s Cardiology service line across inpatient and outpatient settings as well as across all Hospital sites and otherwise within the Cape Cod Healthcare system.
- Return calls to patients and Hospital personnel on a timely basis.
- Place timely calls to patients and Hospital personnel as needed for ancillary test results, to order follow-up tests, and/or to initiate treatment orders, etc.
- Provides Night-time and/or weekend coverage Hospital Rounds as determined by the Cardiology team and based on patient needs and demands.
- Works closely with nurses and other Hospital staff for questions and problems relating to patients during the course of their Hospital treatment (whether inpatient or outpatient) as well as on admission and discharge related matters.
- Assists as a family liaison.
- Understand and follow procedures for managing various conditions such as fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education and post-discharge planning.
- Manage, monitor and manage arrhythmias, pacing, drug therapy, O ‑ therapy, and other non-cardiac medications, under supervision of the attending physician.
- Assists in the evaluation and management of clinical events such as fever, altered hemodynamics, CHF, pulmonary, complication, abrupt vessel closure, arrhythmias, access site complications and others.
- Assists in transfers to and from the intensive care units.
- Discharge Planning: Performs patient education regarding discharge including preventive care and risk factor reduction. Writes discharge orders, prescriptions and dictates discharge summaries in collaboration with the attending physician. Acts as a liaison between the attending Cardiologist and family members, and schedules follow-up care as necessary, including VNA if needed.
- Participate in aspects of research involving planning, performance, and analysis of data, and publication.
- Must complete 100 hours of continuing medical education necessary during each 2-year period of employment to maintain his/her PE certification status.
- Must pass a National PE re-certification exam every six years.
- Attends internal and external education meetings and reads appropriate professional journals in order to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence.
- Encouraged to advance his/her medical and tactical skills as appropriate to deliver optimum patient care.
- Supervise medical students (MD and/or physician assistant) who do clinical rotations in the Cardiology Department as directed by the attending physician.
- Teach students, house staff, nurses, technicians and cardiology fellows as instructed by the attending physician, particularly with regard to the evaluation, treatment and longitudinal care of patients with cardiovascular disease.
Required Qualifications
- Master's Degree
- Current BLS
- American College of Surgeons (ACS) Certification
- Massachusetts Nursing License
- US Department of Justice and Massachusetts’ Controlled Substance DEA Registrations are required for prescribing practitioners
- Three to five years’ cardiovascular service-line experience, preferred
