About the role
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist – Level II performs complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in Nuclear Medicine, operating diagnostic imaging equipment to obtain high-quality diagnostic images with minimal radiation exposure. This role involves administering radiopharmaceuticals and associated medications, ensuring quality control and radiation protection. Independent judgment, initiative, and responsibility for designated areas, procedures, and equipment are essential. The technologist supervises day-to-day operations in the absence of the modality Chief Technologist or Radiology Manager.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and manage scheduling and patient flow for interdepartmental procedures.
- Supervise and perform diagnostic imaging studies under the direction of a radiologist.
- Assist with the education and training of new physicians.
- Develop new protocols and Nuclear Medicine imaging techniques unique to the facility in collaboration with radiologists and PhDs.
- Participate in research initiatives and the development of research protocols.
- Act as a team leader on a routine basis.
- Monitor daily charging of Nuclear Medicine procedures and supplies for accuracy.
- Demonstrate Nuclear Medicine equipment for site visits by visiting physicians and administrators.
- Provide in-service classes within the section.
- Review and examine orders for Nuclear Medicine scans, ensuring appropriateness and accuracy; notify supervisor or physician’s office of discrepancies.
- Identify patient service requirements by establishing rapport with patients and others.
- Verify patient ID using electronic medical records and wristbands; obtain necessary consents and provide education.
- Perform complex specialized tasks associated with Nuclear Medicine scanners and related equipment, adhering to radiation safety procedures and age-appropriate standards.
- Integrate diagnostic and laboratory results, patient history, and medical records to adapt exams as necessary.
- Adhere to Nuclear Medicine Radiopharmaceuticals and Radio Isotopes protocols to maintain high-quality standards.
- Demonstrate complete competence in performing Nuclear Medicine scans as ordered.
- Assist in positioning patients for scans using immobilization and protective equipment.
- Maintain aseptic technique using universal precaution guidelines (e.g., hand washing, gloves, gowns, masks, eye protection, and equipment disinfection).
- Assist radiologists with imaging procedures, IV starts, contrast injections, and interventional Nuclear Medicine procedures.
- Evaluate scans for technical quality, collate images, and label appropriately before transmitting to PACS.
- Schedule patients for procedures and assist with clerical functions.
- Charge procedures and supplies in UChart/Radiant.
- Dispense radiopharmaceuticals orally as per approved protocols.
- Load and operate power injectors for contrast media administration.
- Maintain accurate patient records.
- Assist with orientation and training of new Nuclear Medicine Technologists and student technologists.
- Reduce patient anxieties by providing explanations and answering questions.
- Apply age-specific and developmental care needs for patients (children, adolescents, adults, geriatric, challenged/disabled) as documented.
- Perform basic nursing functions (e.g., assisting with bedpans, emesis basins).
- Address physical and psychological needs of patients during scans; initiate life support measures if necessary and assist in "Code Blue" emergencies.
- Perform CPR as needed.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary work area, stocking exam/dressing rooms with required supplies.
- Provide on-call coverage.
- Report unusual findings to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Adhere to hospital/department HR policies and regulatory body guidelines (e.g., Joint Commission, AHCA, ACR, FL DOH, FDA/MQSA).
For locations performing Bone Mineral Density (BMD) exams, the Technologist must obtain a valid State of Florida General Radiographer or Basic X-Ray Machine Operator license within one year of hire.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Nuclear Medicine Technology accredited program.
- NMTCB or ARRT-N registered.
- Valid State of Florida License as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
- CPR and BLS certification required.
- Three (3) years of relevant experience.
