About the role
The MSAD Residential Educator- Overnights job class provides supervision of student(s) in the residential area and other duties as assigned at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf. Positions at the State Academy for the Deaf require signing skills.
Responsibilities
- Supervise students in the residential area
- Assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics or readiness for each
- Communicate in conversational sign language
- Establish rapport with and provide direction to residential students
- Provide therapeutic intervention, first aid/CPR
- Lift up to 50 lbs with assistance
- Walk/stand for at least eight hours
Requirements
- A passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (Parapro or Paraeducator)
- Knowledge or experience working with students in an educational and/or dormitory setting or in a similar setting as a caregiver
- Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand and follow directions and to maintain records and documentation
- Demonstrated ability to communicate in conversational sign language
- Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide direction to residential students
Qualifications
- Minimum qualifications: Passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (Parapro or Paraeducator) demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics or readiness for each OR the ability to pass the Parapro or Paraeducator assessment within the first 6 months of hire. Knowledge or experience working with students in an educational and/or dormitory setting or in a similar setting as a caregiver. Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand and follow directions and to maintain records and documentation. Demonstrated ability to communicate in conversational sign language. Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide direction to residential students.
- Preferred qualifications: Advanced ASL Skills, Previous experience/background working with deaf/hard of hearing students, Demonstrated knowledge in therapeutic intervention, first aid/CPR.
