About the role

Provide supervision of student(s) in the residential area and other duties as assigned at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf. Positions require signing skills; candidates will be assessed for signing skills prior to hire.

Schedule

  • Evening shift: Monday–Thursday 2:45 pm–12:00 am, Friday 1:00 pm–4:00 pm
  • Days of work: Monday–Friday
  • 10-month per year (36-hour weekly) position based on the school calendar
  • Additional shift differential of $2.25 between the hours of 6:00 pm–6:00 am

Pay

$21.59 – $28.94 per hour

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students in the residential dormitory
  • Assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics, or readiness as needed
  • Maintain records and documentation
  • Communicate with students using conversational sign language
  • Establish rapport with and provide direction to residential students

Requirements

  • A passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (Parapro or Paraeducator) demonstrating the ability to assist with instruction OR the ability to pass the assessment within the first 6 months of hire
  • Knowledge or experience working with students in an educational and/or dormitory setting or similar caregiver role
  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand directions and maintain records
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in conversational sign language (assessed prior to hire)
  • Human relations skills to establish rapport and provide direction to students
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Background Check within the past 12 months

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance
  • Must be able to walk/stand for at least eight hours

Qualifications

  • Advanced ASL skills
  • Previous experience/background working with deaf/hard of hearing students
  • Demonstrated knowledge in therapeutic intervention, first aid/CPR
