About the role

This position is in San Antonio, Texas, and part of the South Texas Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (STXVAHCS) Environmental Management Service (EMS). The primary purpose of this position is transporting EMS supplies and equipment, and laundry/linen to and from Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital and servicing various Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) that are part of the STVAHCS.

Responsibilities

  • Operate vehicles such as shuttle carts/golf carts, vans, pickup trucks, panel/box trucks, flatbed trucks, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, and sports utility vehicles which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 4500 kilograms (10,000 pounds).
  • Loading and unloading from vehicles to provide timely delivery of linen, supplies and equipment directly to users or to storage areas.
  • Secure cargo to prevent damage to contents during transport and ensures that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the maximum capacity.
  • Load and unload by hand but may use a handcart to transport items.
  • Vehicle transport includes laundry, linen and environmental management service supplies, and equipment, over Federal, State and Country roads in all traffic conditions, on specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules.
  • Duties may also involve assisting in areas like the environmental management service supply room and linen and laundry room to receive, store, and move EMS materials and equipment.
  • Perform routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle to include, but not limited to, the addition of fuels or lubricants and the checking of tire pressure.
  • Maintain cleanliness and professional appearance of both the in and outside of the vehicle. Complete all maintenance service records to document activities.
  • Using two-way radios (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
  • Driver's License: The WG-06 Motor Vehicle Operator position requires a valid valid class C license.
  • Screen-out Element: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:
  • Ability to do the work without more than normal supervision
  • Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles)
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation)
  • Operation of Motor Vehicles
  • Reliability and Dependability as a Motor Vehicle Operator (Patient Transport)
  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)
  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
