MILAP Paralegal- Detained

The Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland, Inc. (PBRC) is seeking a highly motivated, organized, and bright individual fluent in Spanish to join the Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project (MILAP) and help increase access to immigration legal services for individuals who are detained or at risk of detention due to ICE check-ins.

About the role

MILAP provides free legal advice to Maryland residents facing removal proceedings and offers limited, concrete legal services to vulnerable families and children to meet case deadlines (e.g., completing asylum applications or changing court locations). The position primarily involves assisting individuals held at the Baltimore Hold Room and may require travel to other Maryland detention locations. The selected individual will also support in-person legal clinics up to 2 days per week, depending on demand. Mentorship and training will be provided.

Responsibilities

• Support the provision of immigration legal services to individuals detained in Maryland, primarily at the Baltimore Hold Room.
• Conduct brief presentations and assist attorneys with pro se legal assistance or full-scope representation (e.g., collecting evidence, interpretation, completing forms under supervision).
• Track and summarize data related to clients served and the effectiveness of legal clinics.
• Share referral information and resources with immigrants seeking legal help.
• Increase community awareness about legal resources, clinics, case placement services, and relevant city/state programs.
• Work with the MILAP Team to maintain and develop a network of community partners.
• Conduct client follow-up and compile data on MILAP’s impact.
• Coordinate and execute interpreter volunteer sign-ups and assess fluency of volunteer interpreters.
• Provide support to the Project Director for grant reporting duties as needed.

Requirements

• Fluency in Spanish (required).
• Bachelor’s Degree (paralegal or law-related experience preferred).
• Experience in community organizing, activism, or public outreach.
• Availability for some evenings and weekends for community legal clinics (with advanced notice).
• Access to reliable transportation for frequent travel to PBRC’s office, the Baltimore Hold Room, and other Maryland locations.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint).
• Proficiency in data collection and tracking (prior Salesforce experience preferred).
• Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, clients, public interest organizations, governmental entities, board members, and donors.
• Experience working with children and/or the immigrant community (preferred).
• Strong commitment to community service and ensuring equal access to justice.

• Competitive salary ranging from $53,000 to $58,000, depending on experience.
