About the role
Under the general direction of the Laboratory Managers and Medical Director, this position is responsible for staff orientation, training, competency assessment, and daily supervision of work activities of personnel.
Responsibilities
- Provides daily supervision of technical, clerical, and service employees.
- Plans, organizes, delineates, and schedules duties and responsibilities of laboratory staff in conjunction with the Laboratory Managers.
- Affords assistance to other technologists as needed with technical problems and interpretation of results.
- Determines the priority of work at the laboratory, ensuring the timely completion of work.
- Is responsible for ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies.
- Maintains manuals on all Standard Operating Procedures and required records and reports.
- Ensures staff adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
- Responsible for orientation, training, and competency assessments, ensuring staff follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Maintains records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
- Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
- Follows the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Identifies and addresses problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, either correcting the problems or immediately notifying the general supervisor, technical consultant, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Bachelor's Degree in Laboratory Sciences, required. Clinical Laboratory Sciences required.
- Certificates/Diplomas: Medical Technologist (ASCP) [MLT, MT, MLA, Histologists] - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required.
- Experience: Lab experience of 3-5 years required. Supervisory experience of 1-2 years preferred.

- Advanced level of analytical skills and judgment.
- Understanding of computer technology and its application to analytical procedures and quality control.
- Comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance, and repair, and analytic techniques.
- The ability to work independently, evaluate situations, and act appropriately.
- Detailed knowledge of applicable federal, state, and accreditation requirements.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Advanced computer skills.
- Comprehensive understanding of test principles, equipment operation, and computer system operations.
