Mental Health Respite Mission

The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church, provides supportive services to participants in a safe, protected, and supervised residential environment. The mission is to lead participants in personal growth and improve life skills for transitioning to the least restrictive level of care within the community.

Summary/Primary Purpose

Provide supervision and management of all Behavior Health Support Specialists, oversee floor operations, manage program nutritional and operational needs, and support program management. Ensure staff compliance with agency policies and procedures, provide performance feedback, and assist in crisis situations.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Support, assist, and direct program staff in goal-directed interactions with program participants, including modeling boundaries and problem-solving for participants and staff.
  • Ensure staff compliance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Meet at least monthly with staff to review progress and provide feedback.
  • Absentee coverage as needed and complete monthly schedules for appropriate coverage.
  • Monitor program operations to ensure policies and procedures are followed.
  • Assess and implement interventions to prevent and de-escalate crisis situations using crisis prevention techniques (CPI).
  • Determine urgent psychiatric care, detoxification, and medical attention in crisis situations and coordinate transportation to appropriate care.
  • Oversee unscheduled discharges and implement crisis procedures.
  • Provide assistance and direction to staff in crisis procedures and interactions.
  • Ensure crisis care is provided in the least restrictive manner.
  • Conduct inspections of residential programs to ensure safety.
  • Participate in on-call responsibilities and provide coverage as needed.
  • Purchase supplies to meet unit needs.
  • Perform medication observation and documentation.
  • Communicate pertinent information to relevant parties.
  • Train BHSS staff and document incident reports, medical observations, and participant interactions.
  • Monitor and communicate building and floor needs with supervisor.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in performance and quality improvement programs.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in a human services-related field, or active enrollment in a related degree program with documented progress toward completion.
  • Three years of experience in a behavioral health acute care, residential, or crisis stabilization setting utilizing crisis de-escalation techniques.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Two to three years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to comply with ethics and professional boundaries.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to access payroll, timekeeping, and personal data via a web-based system.
  • Administrative skills including use of standard office equipment, data entry, attention to detail, and filing.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and spoken, and ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
  • Pass all applicable background checks.
  • Valid driver’s license and approval through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program.
  • Ability to consistently apply program rules and policies and follow emergency procedures.
  • Obtain Medication Aid, CPR/First aid, and CPI certification within the first 90 days of employment.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this job include sitting, standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can vary from quiet to loud.
