Summary
Performs routine and specialized testing on patient specimens to aid in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. Adheres to Brown University Health's values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs testing on all specimens ensuring accuracy and completeness of results.
- Works collaboratively in a team environment to meet Laboratory goals.
- Answers inquiries from physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Mentors new employees and students.
- Processes specimens for laboratory testing according to department/section policy and procedures.
- Verifies accuracy of test specimens before testing.
- Performs technical procedures as required by department or supervisor.
- Ensures test results correlate with patient's clinical situation and rechecks and reports questionable results.
- Follows critical value procedures.
- Performs scheduled maintenance to assure proper operation of equipment.
- Records procedures performed and conducts quality control and quality assurance procedures.
- Applies problem-solving and decision-making skills with minimal supervision.
- Prepares and presents continuing education for department personnel.
- Strives to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
Required Qualifications
- Responsible for ongoing development of work skills through available resources.

- Assists in the orientation of others and actively participates in mentoring.

- Demonstrates understanding of hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including safety issues.

Education/Experience/Licensure/Other Required
- Bachelor's degree in MLS or related field per ASCP Regulations.
- MLS certificate.
- If hired without MLS certification, must be eligible to sit for the MLS exam and obtain certification within 180 days of hire.
- If MLS certification is not obtained within 180 days of hire, the employee will be moved to the SEIU Union until completion of certificate.
Supervisory Responsibility
Acts as charge person to provide direction, support, and technical ability to others.
Pay Range
$32.33-$53.50
