Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Performs testing on all specimens and ensures that results are accurate and complete.
Works in a team environment to accomplish Laboratory goals.
Possess knowledge of Medical Technology and answers inquiries from physicians and other health care professionals.
May be required to mentor new employees and students.
Obtains and processes specimens for laboratory testing according to department/section policy and procedures.
Verifies accuracy of test specimen before testing.
Performs technical procedures as required by department or supervisor.
Performs all testing in a timely manner as established by departmental policy and performs all tests with confidence.
Inspects instruments and verifies that equipment is in proper working order before testing.
Insures that test results correlate with each other and the patient's clinical situation.
Rechecks and reports to the supervisor all questionable results.
Follows critical value procedure.
Demonstrates proficiency in performing all computer tasks associated with job responsibilities including registration, outreach specimens and send out specimens.
Performs scheduled maintenance to assure proper operation of equipment.
Records the procedures performed.
Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures and instrument checks correctly.
Performs analytical and decision making functions with minimal supervision.

Is responsible for ongoing development of his/her work skills through the use of available resources (i.e.: in-services, formal educational programs, other work groups and on-the-job training).
Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-services and/or reviews documentation as required.
Assists in the orientation of others and actively participates in mentoring.
Performs analytical and decision-making functions with minimal supervision.
Recognizes and seeks assistance/consultation when appropriate.
Demonstrates an understanding of relative Hospital and all-departmental policies and procedures including safety issues.
Possesses awareness of programs/services provided by Hospital and where they are located.
Is cooperative in interactions, treating customers with courtesy, respect and compassion.
Is patient when responding to questions and answers questions appropriately.
Responds to requests in a timely manner.
Handles interruptions in a skillful way.
Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.
Strives to prevent/resolve customer concerns to the customer's satisfaction.
Education/Experience/Licensure/Other
Required:
- Bachelors, in MLS or a related field per ASCP Regulations
- MLS certificate
If employee does not have MLS certification at time of hire:
- Must be eligible to sit for MLS exam
- Obtain MLS certificate within 180 days of hire
- If MLS certification is not obtained within 180 days of hire, the employee will be moved to the SEIU Union until completion of certificate.
Supervisory Responsibility
Acts as charge person assigned to provide direction, support and technical ability to others.
