Responsibilities
- Calibrate or check the calibration of meters and instruments.
- Disconnect, reconnect, install, remove, read, and exchange: single-phase, 3-phase; self-contained, and transformer rated meters.
- Install, remove, replace, investigate, and troubleshoot primary/secondary meters, instrument transformers, metering circuits, and related equipment.
- Make regular inspections to check the condition and operation of installed equipment and perform necessary maintenance work.
- Make standard operating tests and checks on new equipment to ensure proper installation and operation in accordance with established standards and specifications.
- Check layout and recommend proper meter and service layout for industrial connections.
- Change internal connections of meters or reconnect instrument transformers to alter their capacity.
- Read and interpret schematic and switchboard drawings.
- Rework transformer rated metering installations to change the socket form type from one form to another in either energized or de-energized states.
- Investigate proposed new and upgraded primary, and the most complex secondary service installations for location of service and meters and equipment.
- Determine proper size and type of equipment and make sketches and recommendations for the contractor or customer.
- Inspecting new and upgraded service installations, meters, and equipment, before energizing, to be certain that such installations meet the Company’s and NEC requirements.
- Make layouts, installations, changes, removals and inspections of watthour meters, demand meters, instrument transformers, cabinets, panels, secondary wiring, and associated auxiliary devices on primary, and the most complex secondary service installations.
- Cookordination the more complex cases of inspecting testing, checking, adjusting, calibrating, and repairing all classes, ratings and types of metering and testing equipment on both energized and deenergized facilities and equipment.
- Conduct special tests and studies with respect to electrical metering and testing problems.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and repair advanced communication network issues with smart meter technology and Fieldpro software.
- Operating control circuits, high voltage switches, and performing other similar or associated operations, when assigned.
- Testing instrument transformers for breakdown, ratio, polarity, and phase angle; testing instrument transformers for performance and location of possible faults.
- Accurately and timely complete and submit all paperwork as necessary.
- Instruct and train other technicians as required.
- Operating control circuits, high voltage switches, and performing other similar or associated operations, when assigned;

- Ability to meet job knowledge and skill requirements will be determined by company interviews and passing the EEI Technician Occupations Selection System (TECH) test.
- Must have knowledge of electricity and electronics normally acquired by taking a two-year course at an acceptable technical school, and/or related work experience.
- Must be able to safely and satisfactorily perform work assignments of lower classifications, pass an oral and written examination to demonstrate proficiency.
- Must have demonstrated aptitude for and ability to perform the duties of Meter Technician A.
- Safety: Ability to work safely, follow safety rules and regulations, and meet first-aid requirements.
- Physical: Manual dexterity to operate handheld devices, accurately input information, adjust and calibrate meters and instruments, ability to do considerable walking or driving, ascend and descend steps, work in all weather conditions and navigate across rough terrain. Must possess ability to climb and work off ladders in close quarters. Ability to lift and carry more than 25 pounds and possess range of motion commensurate with installation and/or removal of meters and metering equipment. Must have vision corrected to 20-30 and pass color vision test.
- Mental: Ability to report meter conditions and read data accurately, read and take appropriate action based upon reports and work orders, deal with customers, and the public in a professional and courteous manner, work with energized meters and the ability to appropriately deal with potentially dangerous animals. Must demonstrate individual initiative, ingenuity, and judgment in carrying out work assignments.
- Clerical: Ability to communicate effectively and operate two-way radios, telephones, cellular phones and other communication devices. Ability to operate computers, tablets and associated software, and write legibly to prepare and maintain accurate records, reports and job briefings.
