METER SERVICE PERSON

About the Role

Perform semi-skilled tasks related to servicing utility meters, including installing, changing, and turning utility service on or off. Provide highly responsible support to the Electrician/Meter Shop Foreman.

Receives direct supervision from the Electrician/Meter - Substation Services Shop Foreman or Superintendent. This position does not supervise others.

Responsibilities

• Perform semi-skilled tasks for installation and maintenance of utility meters with voltages up to 480 volts.
• Receive daily orders, cut-offs, and trouble reports; investigate customer complaints, including checking for service defects and leaks; read meters to identify defects.
• Replace utility meters for recalibration and repair.
• Hang notices on meters to inform customers of service shut-off for non-payment.
• Turn utility meters on or off and install new meters; read substation breakers and charts.
• Operate equipment such as pickup trucks, hand tools, limb cutters, meter socket testers, meter lock rings, padlocks, and related tools.
• Test equipment and machinery regularly to ensure quality and performance.
• Monitor and record transformer tap changes, temperature, and nitrogen levels.
• Monitor relay flags on each breaker for state changes.
• Monitor distribution feeder circuits for amperage, voltage, and peak demand.
• Drain water from pneumatic circuit breaker compressors and monitor SF6 breaker gauges.
• Maintain substation housekeeping and monitor air conditioning levels.
• Monitor and record reclosers and flag counts of operations.
• Check and record the status of substation batteries, water levels, and specific gravity.
• Perform daily mail runs and pick up department supplies.
• Assist in the repair and maintenance of street and traffic lights as needed.
• Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

Knowledge of:

• Basic AC and DC fundamentals.
• Operational characteristics of tools and equipment used in the assigned work area.

Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical path includes:

• Experience: No prior experience required.
• Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Additional electrical training is a plus.

Licenses or Certificates

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Kansas driver’s license.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid CPR Certificate.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid First Aid Certificate.
