About the Role

The Electrician provides electrical services throughout the Smithsonian facilities for the installation of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment to support the mission, health, comfort, and safety of occupants and visitors. This position operates under the general supervision of the Craft Shop Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Install, repair, modify, maintain, and troubleshoot premise wiring systems, including interior and exterior wiring, lighting, control circuits, emergency and standby power systems, and signaling circuit wiring, along with associated hardware, fittings, and wiring devices.
• Adapt methods to fabricate, install, modify, and troubleshoot specialized electrical control or monitoring systems and equipment designed for unique research project conditions.
• Perform moderately heavy work, including lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs., working outdoors in various weather conditions, climbing ladders and stairs, and standing or walking for extended periods.
• Respond to emergencies to restore Smithsonian operations, including availability for late shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties.

Requirements

• Pass a pre-employment background investigation.
• Complete a probationary period (if required).
• Maintain a bank account for direct deposit/electronic transfer.
• Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service.
• Possess an active or inactive Journeyman or Master electrician’s license (must upload a copy with your application).
• Hold a valid State or District of Columbia driver’s license (must upload a copy with your application).

Qualifications

To be rated qualified, your overall experience and training must demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position. Your resume (limited to two pages) should clearly describe how your experience aligns with the responsibilities and specialized experience needed. Include both paid and unpaid experience, such as volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps), as it helps build relevant competencies.

This position is included in the bargaining unit. Recruitment incentives may be authorized, contingent upon availability, and may require a service agreement to remain in the Federal government for a specified period.
