About the Role

The Electrician provides electrical services throughout the Smithsonian facilities for the installation of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment to support the mission, health, comfort, and safety of occupants and visitors. This position operates under the general supervision of the Craft Shop Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Install, repair, modify, maintain, and troubleshoot premise wiring systems, including interior and exterior wiring, lighting, control circuits, emergency and standby power systems, and signaling circuit wiring, along with associated hardware, fittings, and wiring devices.
• Adapt methods to fabricate, install, modify, and troubleshoot specialized electrical control or monitoring systems and equipment designed for unique research project conditions.
• Perform moderately heavy work, including lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs., working outdoors in various weather conditions, climbing ladders and stairs, and standing or walking for extended periods.
• Respond to emergencies to restore Smithsonian operations, including availability for late shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties.

Requirements

• Pass a pre-employment background investigation.
• Complete a probationary period (if required).
• Maintain a bank account for direct deposit/electronic transfer.
• Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service.
• Possess an active or inactive Journeyman or Master electrician’s license (upload a copy with your application).
• Hold a valid State or District of Columbia driver’s license (upload a copy with your application).

To be rated qualified, your overall experience and training must demonstrate the minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position. Include both paid and unpaid experience, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) or other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, or social).
