About the Role
A Senior Medical Technologist supervises and performs specialized laboratory work in areas such as Hematology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Blood Bank.
Responsibilities
- Supervises one or more clinical laboratory departments.
- Performs all tests and examinations within the designated specialty.
- Notifies and discusses abnormal results with physicians.
- Assists in evaluating and implementing new procedures.
- Schedules special procedure tests.
- Assists in maintaining the quality control program.
- Stays updated on new technical and theoretical procedures and coordinates continuing education for subordinates.
- Provides assistance to technologists and technicians when problems arise.
- Maintains records and procedure files for the department.
- Participates in shift coverage for call-in and weekend duty.
- May perform duties of Chief or Assistant Chief Technologist in their absence.
- May contact physicians to relay and discuss patient results.
- Depending on the hospital, may perform procedures without a physician's request.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- A Master's Degree from an accredited institution with a major in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences, plus at least four years of pertinent laboratory experience, including two years in the designated specialty in a clinical laboratory.
- A baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology from a CAHEA-approved School of Medical Technology, certification as a Medical Technologist by a national agency, plus at least six years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience, including two years in a designated laboratory specialty.
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a major in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences, plus:
- At least six years of pertinent laboratory experience, including two years in the designated specialty in a hospital clinical laboratory with a director at the doctoral level.
- Successful completion of pertinent courses that, combined with experience, provide technical and professional knowledge comparable to the second qualification above.
