Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to treatments, exams, and procedures.
  • Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures by gathering patient data (vital signs, biometrics) and documenting in the EHR; obtain past medical history and history of current illness/condition.
  • Perform point-of-care testing as ordered; obtain specimens via nasal, throat, skin and cheek swabs, urine collection, and—with additional training—venipuncture and capillary blood collection; facilitate transport of specimens.
  • Stock examination rooms with appropriate supplies, dispose of medical waste properly, clean and maintain laboratory and examination equipment, and clean rooms between patients.
  • Upon completion of additional education, set up sterile equipment trays, perform EKGs, administer eye drops (Ophthalmology), apply topical anesthetic (e.g., EMLA, Synera Patch), administer designated immunization/vaccines, and perform DexaScan in accordance with medical order or written protocol (Nephrology Clinic).
  • Complete non-assessment forms such as Home Health, DME, Title 19, school forms, and other governmental forms; may enter non-medication orders into the EHR per organizational policy.
  • Provide normal lab, imaging, and pathology results to patients and families via phone or letter at the direction of the physician or provider; document that results are normal in the provider’s notes.
  • Respond to inbound interactions via EHR to schedule and confirm appointments, registrations, and inquiries following established protocols; proactively contact patients, caregivers, physicians, and community members to schedule appointments, complete registrations, and respond to inquiries.
  • Perform front-desk support including telephone coverage, scheduling, check-in/out procedures, collections, and cash reconciliation; generate required reports.

Requirements

  • Less than 1 year: Medical Assistants hired before 4/1/2026 must have a minimum 6 months experience in a patient care setting or completion of a Medical Assistant program.
  • Effective 4/1/2026: 6 months experience in a patient care setting preferred for new employees.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medical Assistants hired before 4/1/2026 or acquired from a merger/acquisition must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Effective 4/1/2026, new employees must have graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers required; must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Effective April 1, 2026, new employees must obtain one of the following Medical Assistant Certifications within 180 days: NCMA (NCCT), CMA (AAMA), CCMA (NHA), RMA (AMT), AAMP or AAH, NRCMA (NAHP), or CMAC (AMCA).
  • Medical Assistants hired before April 1, 2026 or acquired from a merger/acquisition may present an MA certificate acquired through an accredited program.
  • Must submit to and pass an external background check.
