About the Role

To assist customers in their shopping experience by providing high-quality meat products efficiently, courteously, and in a friendly manner. This role involves preparing and displaying meat products, including daily smoked meats, and assisting customers at the meat counter and with smoked products.

This position formally reports to the Meat Manager and is classified as non-exempt.

Responsibilities

• Follow proper techniques for cutting, preparing, and displaying meat products in cases.
• Smoke various meats for sale in the store.
• Monitor product expiration dates and ensure proper rotation of items.
• Remove damaged, unsaleable, or returnable products and follow procedures for damage claims.
• Accurately count and record merchandise during inventory.
• Update shelf tags, price markers, and label merchandise quickly and accurately.
• Answer customer questions accurately and courteously regarding department items, procedures, and policies.
• Resolve customer complaints professionally and escalate to management when necessary.
• Assist customers at the counter by weighing, wrapping, and pricing selected items.
• Implement Cosentino Customer Service Standards.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area for customers and coworkers.
• Comply with all health regulations, sanitation guidelines, and safety procedures.
• Operate, clean, and maintain all equipment safely and competently.
• Meet or exceed productivity standards for individual and team results.
• Promote new items and weekly specials through effective merchandising and displays.
• Unload, sort, and stock incoming shipments without damaging merchandise.
• Stock shelves by matching UPC codes to shelf tags and ensuring products are front-facing.
• Monitor the department for potential security issues and report concerns to management.
• Complete additional tasks as identified by management and assist other departments as needed.

Requirements

• Obtain a food handling permit within the first 14 days of employment.
• Meet training and experience requirements for Journeyman Meat Cutter status within the first 2 years of employment (applies to both union and non-union settings).
• Complete ongoing training and development as outlined in the Cosentino Learning Plan.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Skills

• Strong verbal and interpersonal skills for positive customer and peer interactions.
• Basic math and reading skills required for the position.

Physical Abilities

• Reach overhead (up to 75 inches) and lift objects weighing up to 20 lbs with both hands.
• Push and pull grocery items/carts with a peak force of up to 40 lbs.
• Stand and walk for long periods on hard surfaces (tile, asphalt, concrete).
• Occasionally lift and carry up to 80 lbs.
• Bend, squat, and crouch, including to floor level.
• Work in cold conditions, such as grocery coolers and freezers.
• Climb ladders up to 5 feet (non-essential).
