Manager: Ski Patrol

Job Summary

The Patrol Snow Safety Manager will oversee the avalanche hazard mitigation program for Crested Butte Mountain Resort and support the management of the Ski Patrol.

Job Responsibilities

• Oversee avalanche hazard mitigation program including operations, assignments, training, documentation, and regulatory compliance.
• Aid in managing the patrol team's functions such as hiring, performance management, operational planning, and execution.
• Develop leaders within the scope of this position to enhance leadership within current roles and prepare for growth.
• Oversee initial and ongoing avalanche mitigation and rescue training for the patrol team.
• Support a positive work culture focused on employee safety.
• Lead efforts to improve safety within Ski Patrol and the resort.
• Manage the avalanche department budget in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Patrol.
• Maintain supplies for avalanche routes and rescue programs.
• Ensure compliance with federal and state explosives regulations.
• Track and manage explosives inventory.
• Hold a current Type 1 explosive permit and be a Responsible Person with the ATF.
• Oversee daily weather and avalanche hazard forecasting, reporting, and documentation.
• Coordinate mountain setup, teardown, and daily opening/closing with changing conditions.
• Interact professionally with outside agencies and industry partners.
• Engage with peers at other Vail Resorts and across the region.
• Function as a skiing patroller when needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Expert-level alpine skier.
• EMT certification.
• Colorado Explosive Permit.
• Advanced-level snowmobile operator.
• Professional-level 2 avalanche school or equivalent.
• Advanced computer skills.
• Fluency in English.
• At least 21 years old.
• 10+ seasons of avalanche mitigation experience preferred.
