Under the supervision of the director and in collaboration with support staff (e.g., supervisors, leads, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse educators), plans, implements, and evaluates processes related to performance improvement, staffing effectiveness, fiscal management, staff competence, and customer service outcomes within the assigned area of responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Assures quality and appropriateness of care in the assigned service area.
- Communicates approved performance improvement initiatives, goals, and trended report findings to subordinate staff to ensure understanding and compliance.
- Uses processes and metrics to measure and manage assigned unit compliance.
- Delegates data collection activities, compiles and analyzes data as outlined in approved staffing effectiveness and performance improvement plans.
- Provides corrective action plans as required.
- Creates an environment of shared decision-making and promotes multidisciplinary collaboration on patient care and related issues.
- Serves as a facilitator by removing barriers that prevent staff from effectively and efficiently performing their roles.
- Conducts regularly scheduled meetings with subordinate staff and maintains high visibility in the assigned area.
- Promotes positive customer relations with physicians, patients, families, visitors, and employees.
- Follows up on complaints and reports, providing feedback to impacted parties.
- Monitors levels of patient, staff, and physician satisfaction via surveys, interviews, and formal/informal rounds.
- Provides input into the review and revision of staff development and competency maintenance programs/plans.
- Responsible for the timely execution of approved plans and documenting results.
- Supports professional growth and development of subordinate staff by coordinating schedules for attendance at conferences and committee meetings.
- Seeks opportunities to enhance staff competence and professional growth through mentoring and gradually increasing responsibilities.
- Participates in the development of capital and operating budgets for the assigned service area.
- Analyzes actual-to-budget performance and creates variance reports as requested.
- Identifies cost-reduction initiatives in areas such as supply and equipment usage.
- Monitors human resource indicators such as patient/staff ratios, skill-mix, and overtime/agency utilization.
- Creates balanced staffing schedules and adjusts staffing ratios and skill-mix according to current volume.
- Monitors payroll practices, including time and attendance for assigned personnel.
- Supervises the creation and implementation of staff assignments.
- Ensures that regulatory requirements, standards, policies, and procedures are communicated to subordinate staff and integrated into practice.
- Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to plan, implement, and monitor clinical activities within the assigned service area.
- Monitors activities for and ensures compliance with laws, government regulations, JCAHO requirements, regulatory agencies, and Karmanos Cancer Center (KCC) policies.
- Implements external and internal audit recommendations as directed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a clinical healthcare field required.
- Ambulatory experience preferred.
- Two to three years of progressively more responsible management experience in a healthcare environment preferred.
