About the role
This is a management-level position responsible for overseeing the engineering division's operations, including design, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects. The role serves as a key advisor to the City Engineer and provides technical leadership to engineering staff.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and direct engineering division staff, including assigning work, evaluating performance, and ensuring professional development
- Manage the design, bidding, and construction administration of capital improvement projects
- Review and approve engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents
- Coordinate with other city departments, outside agencies, and private developers on infrastructure matters
- Provide technical guidance and quality control for engineering studies, reports, and analyses
- Assist in budget preparation and management for the engineering division
- Respond to citizen inquiries and resolve engineering-related concerns
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and professional standards
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state or ability to obtain within one year
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience
- At least 2 years of supervisory or management experience
- Valid driver's license
Qualifications
- Knowledge of public works infrastructure design and construction practices
- Familiarity with municipal codes, zoning regulations, and environmental requirements
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Effective written and verbal communication abilities
- Proficiency with engineering software and GIS applications
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
