Manager of Engineering / Assistant City Engineer

About the role

This is a management-level position responsible for overseeing the engineering division's operations, including design, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects. The role serves as a key advisor to the City Engineer and provides technical leadership to engineering staff.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and direct engineering division staff, including assigning work, evaluating performance, and ensuring professional development
• Manage the design, bidding, and construction administration of capital improvement projects
• Review and approve engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents
• Coordinate with other city departments, outside agencies, and private developers on infrastructure matters
• Provide technical guidance and quality control for engineering studies, reports, and analyses
• Assist in budget preparation and management for the engineering division
• Respond to citizen inquiries and resolve engineering-related concerns
• Ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and professional standards

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in the state or ability to obtain within one year
• Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience
• At least 2 years of supervisory or management experience
• Valid driver's license

Qualifications

• Knowledge of public works infrastructure design and construction practices
• Familiarity with municipal codes, zoning regulations, and environmental requirements
• Strong project management and organizational skills
• Effective written and verbal communication abilities
• Proficiency with engineering software and GIS applications
