Manager Critical Care - Surgical ICU - Sharp Grossmont Hospital - Day Shift - Full-time

Shift start and end times are variable. 8-hour shifts (8/40) with weekend requirements as needed. On-call is not required.

Pay

The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position: $86.870 – $112.100 – $137.320 per hour. The actual pay rate and pay grade will be dependent on factors including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and employer business practices.

What You Will Do

Accountable for coordinating the ongoing development and productivity of a work unit or units and for maintaining the quality of care within that work unit and/or programs. Assists the Director with operational planning and provides daily work direction to achieve unit-level care and organizational objectives. Contributes to budget development and maintains responsibility for achieving budgetary objectives. The population served may include neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises staff, including hiring, coaching, counseling, and ensuring performance appraisals are completed.
  • Ensures productivity and quality are tracked and maintained.
  • Collaborates with Director, other Operations Coordinators, and Senior Specialists to standardize, update, and/or maintain policies and procedures.
  • Ensures quality care and compliance with internal standards and regulatory and accreditation bodies.
  • Collaborates with marketing, Service Line Director, and community care departments regarding the development, marketing, implementation, and evaluation of programs.
  • Assumes 24-hour responsibility and accountability for the unit/units supervised.
  • Participates as directed in the annual operational planning process and executes priorities to ensure implementation of the operational plan within the work unit or units.
  • Promotes staff accountability and empowerment through formal and informal mechanisms.
  • Serves customers including patients, physicians, peers, consumers, coworkers, directors, and other senior administrators.

Quality

  • Maintains quality patient care through clinical expertise, nursing process, and effective supervisorial skills.
  • Participates in both unit and level-of-care quality assurance processes.
  • Reviews or coordinates the review of quality variance reports for designated units, identifies trends, and develops action plans for resolution.
  • Identifies and trends learning needs of staff and works with Senior Specialists to ensure needs are met.
  • Ensures that standards of care are implemented, evaluated, and updated.
  • Trends patient satisfaction and implements action plans to achieve satisfaction goals.
  • Identifies and trends needs of customers served and the SCH system regarding service line development.
  • Ensures delivery of quality patient care that meets all accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Reviews, revises, develops, and maintains safety policies and procedures related to department activities and work environment.
  • Reviews current operations and assesses appropriateness of and compliance with safety policies.
  • Works proactively with Biomed, Risk Management, and others to ensure ongoing compliance.

Financial Management

  • Maintains operating unit or units within budgeted cost per UOS and develops achievable action plans when costs exceed budget.
  • Contributes to the identification and operationalization of cost-reduction measures or identifies revenue-enhancing opportunities.
  • Maintains unit and/or units' productivity at > 97%.
  • Participates in annual budget development.

Human Resource Management

  • Ensures that staff performance appraisals are conducted in a timely manner.
  • Coaches, counsels, and institutes developmental plans as necessary.
  • Ensures all pertinent information is provided to staff through meetings and other forms of communication.
  • Enables staff to participate in scheduling and staffing.
  • Ensures the schedule is posted within the designated time frame.
  • Assists staff in accessing services provided by Human Resources.
  • Maintains up-to-date employee records.

Leadership

  • Effectively institutes change, supporting unit, level of care, and organizational goals.
  • Maintains a positive and productive relationship with medical staff, peers, patients, families, directors, and senior administrators.
  • Identifies unit-level care or organizational problems, develops, and/or contributes to a plan to resolve problems.
  • Implements and/or assists with plans to achieve resolution.
  • Demonstrates effective team building and leads and/or participates in task forces for system integration.

Professional Responsibility

Must achieve three of the following items to meet standard:

  • Develops and achieves goals on a yearly basis.
  • Attends and/or participates in professional-related organizations.
  • Participates or attends formal conferences or seminars.
  • Serves on a community advisory board or task force.
  • Publishes an article in a professional journal.
  • Engages in public speaking.
  • Participates in facility tours.
  • Completes other special projects or activities as negotiated with the Service Line Director.
  • Represents the department on a systemwide committee.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • 3 years in a leadership position
  • California Registered Nurse (RN) – CA Board of Registered Nursing (REQUIRED)
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) – American Heart Association (REQUIRED)

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Master's Degree
  • 2 years of management experience
  • 3 years of clinical experience

  • Managerial/Supervisory skills: Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in a rapid change environment and current healthcare dynamic climate. Demonstrated ability to plan, design, and implement one's own work and to work independently with minimal observation or supervision.
  • Human Relations skills: Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively and to work collaboratively with multiple others of diverse cultures, educational backgrounds, and experiences. Demonstrated knowledge of team-building skills and principles of self-managed work teams.
  • Political Process skills: Ability to function well under the conditions of the current environment; ability to collaborate with multiple others; ability to build partnerships with physicians and others.
