About the role
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic II to perform a variety of duties and maintenance tasks associated with the Stormwater Operations group.
Responsibilities
- Perform heavy manual labor in connection with the maintenance and repair of Stormwater pumping stations and related equipment.
- Perform manual labor using hand and power tools, including picks, shovels, chainsaws, and other related equipment, to complete assigned maintenance and operational tasks.
- Lift without assistance heavy articles that weigh approximately 50 pounds.
- Operate a motor vehicle and ensure the proper tools, equipment, and materials are available to complete repairs.
- Assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting stormwater utility problems/mechanical pump failures and/or pump malfunctions, follow work orders, monitor and respond to alarms at stormwater pumping stations, and prioritize tasks to accomplish repairs.
- Notify supervisor of significant operational problems with pump stations; work with contractors to identify pump station problems; and assist contractors during more complex pump station repairs.
- Prepare written documents for work activities.
- Install and repair permanent barricades to make the public aware of a hazardous situation.
- Work in all types of weather conditions as well as nights, weekends, holidays, and standby as needed.
- Safely access and work from extension ladders and within confined spaces while performing assigned duties.
- Maintain and repair pump stations, motors, pond aerators, and sluice gates.
Schedule
Monday – Thursday, 6:30 am – 5:00 pm.
Requirements
- Mandatory pre-employment physical.
- Class A CDL required.
CDL Hiring Bonus
Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:
- $1,000 with first paycheck
- $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
- $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
Additional Information
This position is ALPHA I and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes, snow, etc.) in response to short-term departmental needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
