MACHINIST LDR

This position is located in the Mechanical Shop, Shop 931 of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Responsibilities

• Lead employees in the roles of Machinist WG-10, Machine Tool Operator WG-09, Machinist (WSPP) WG-08, and Machinist Helper WG-05.
• Use shop mathematics to perform necessary calculations.
• Ensure compliance with supervisor's instructions regarding work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines.
• Verify the availability of required plans, blueprints, materials, tools, and stock from supply locations.
• Train and demonstrate skills to trainees through On the Job Experience (OJE).
• Instruct machinists, machine tool operators, helpers, and apprentices on proper work procedures, tool usage, and safety.
• Provide guidance on utilizing shop training tools such as mock-ups in work areas or facilities.
• Answer questions from workers regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and directives.
• Use precision measuring instruments, including depth gauges, calipers, and verniers.
• Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, sketches, technical manuals, and test memos.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date is subject to provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
• Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service.
• This is a bargaining unit position.
• Must successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
• Must obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.
• Must wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously during work shifts.
• Work is performed in areas with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and chemicals).
• Must participate in medical surveillance programs.
• May require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS locations, including remote or isolated sites. Must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the necessary knowledge and skills. Emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
