Machinist IV
About the Role
You will be directly responsible for machining quality components to stated specifications and protecting machine tools from damage caused by “Crashes.” This position requires a high degree of independent thinking, attention to detail, and resourcefulness to translate specifications into component requirements while applying best practices effectively. You will receive little to no guidance on difficult technical and scheduling problems, and accuracy of machined components is required.
Responsibilities
- Work under limited supervision, following written and/or verbal instructions and established procedures to perform standardized or advanced tasks.
- Retrieve, understand, and adhere to QAP documentation.
- Perform autonomous maintenance as needed.
- Independently ensure and be accountable for quality work.
- Act as a mentor to new machinists.
- Build and set all tooling, including turning tools, grooving, roughing, finishing, and contour tooling.
- Read and interpret drawings, technical specifications, and CMM reports.
- Demonstrate advanced problem-solving skills.
- Make tool and fixture offsets.
- Identify deviations in material requirements.
- Utilize and explain fixturing and machine offsets.
- Apply a thorough understanding of G and M codes, canned cycles, and circular interpolation.
- Correctly use and interpret indicators, probing tools, and set tool lengths at the machine.
- Apply basic Lean Methodology and 5S principles, with the ability to train others.
- Use measuring instruments (e.g., ID mics, OD mics, calipers, blade mics, tri mics) with master-level precision.
- Set up technical tools and instruments required for product line duties.
- Identify and set up fixturing for parts in accordance with set-up documentation.
- Build complex tools.
- Meet deadlines and manage priorities while adhering to key performance objectives.
- Apply a thorough understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Interpret CMM reports (experience on CMM is preferable).
- Use basic math, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Understand material properties.
- Use all functions of CNC controls, read programs, and perform advanced editing.
- Train machinists grades 10.2 and below.
- Operate machines such as saws, basic mills, MTO Mills, MTO Lathes, two-axis lathes, robotic cells, and advanced bending tech with the ability to program robots or complex mills with multiple setups.
Requirements
- 5+ years of machining experience.
- High school diploma or GED (Associate degree preferred).
- Ability to pass a written and practical competency test.
Work Environment
Spends 95% of the time in a manufacturing/shop environment and 5% in an office. Exposure to potential hazards includes working with high-pressure equipment, limited spaces, high noise, inclement weather, chemicals, pressure testing, heavy lift operations, and shop/field traffic.
Physical Demands
- Frequent walking, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing upward, and crawling in limited workspaces.
- Repetitive lifting of components up to 50 lbs.
