Summary
This role is responsible for operating manual machining equipment, including large lathes and horizontal boring bars, to repair and manufacture paper machine rolls to precise tolerances. The ideal candidate brings strong mechanical aptitude, blueprint reading skills, and a commitment to safety and quality in a hands-on shop environment.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate large manual lathes for close tolerance work on paper machine rolls.
- Operate manual horizontal boring bar for drilling and tapping, balance weight removal, and broken fastener removal.
- Operate manual lathe to strip old paper machine roll covers and tool new covers to size.
- Operate metallized spray weld repair equipment. Previous experience is a plus, but Voith will train on this task if not experienced.
- Machine, repair, rework, and fit parts to required tolerances and surface finishes.
- Select proper tooling, speeds, feeds, and workholding methods based on material type and job requirements.
- Capability to operate large overhead cranes.
- Perform all job requirements according to procedures outlined in the VOITH Quality Manual, Company Procedures, and Work Instructions.
- Reports problems to higher levels of authority as required by the Quality System.
- All other duties that may be assigned.
Requirements
- Must possess good mechanical aptitude.
- 1-3 years of experience with manual machining is required. Some experience with CNC machining is desired but not necessary.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and shop sketches.
- High School graduate or equivalent is required.
- Vocational school graduate or apprenticeship in machining, millwright, mechanical maintenance, or equivalent is desired, but not required.
- Commitment to safe work practices and quality workmanship.
Physical Demands
- Regular standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting in a machine shop environment.
- Ability to lift materials, tools, and parts as required by the job.
- Exposure to noise, moving mechanical equipment, metal chips, lubricants, and varying shop temperatures.
- Use of required personal protective equipment including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and safety shoes.
