About the role

This position is located at the Spartanburg Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Branch Office in Spartanburg, SC. There will be two positions filled from this posting.

Responsibilities

  • Administer road test examinations for all classes of vehicles:
    • Class A: Any combination of vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVR) of 26,001 pounds provided the GVR of vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
    • Class B: Any single unit vehicle with a GVR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such towing vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
    • Class C: Any single unit vehicle or combination of vehicles that does not meet the definition of A or B, but that is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver or is placarded for hazardous materials.
    • Class D: Passenger vehicles and all non-commercial vehicles that do not exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
    • Class E: Non-commercial single unit vehicles and all non-commercial vehicles that do not exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
    • Class F: Non-commercial combination vehicles that exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
    • Class M: Motorcycles and CDLs if in a CDL Office.
  • Determine applicant’s physical and mental fitness and competency to safely operate motor vehicles.
  • Administer written, oral and automated examinations to determine applicant’s knowledge of laws and driving procedures.
  • Perform pre-trip inspection on the general working condition of vehicle operated by the applicant.
  • Examine, accept, prepare, enter, and print all documents required in issuing driver licenses, beginner permits and identification cards for all classes; original duplicate transfers, temporary and replacement vehicle registrations, license plates, permits and/or titles, including requests for repossessed, abandoned, salvaged, homemade and rebuilt vehicles.
  • Perform edits of the customer’s name and address fields.
  • Process Motor Vehicle Registration Requests.
  • Research suspension inquiries, modify driver International Registration Plan, registration credentials and issue automobile dealership licenses.
  • Answer customer inquiries pertaining to driver, vehicle, and registration, titling, and insurance requirements by phone and in person.
  • Greet and direct customers to appropriate areas in the office.
  • Collect all required fees and donations for the Donate Life Fund.
  • Reconcile and prepare individual daily report and refund request documents.
  • Compute vehicle sales taxes and make weight adjustments to the vehicle record file.
  • Receive, code and issue receipts for surrendered license plates; box surrendered plates and complete pick-up requests.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Fax and mail documents and run errands for the branch office that may include trips to the post office and making bank deposits.

Working Conditions

Road tests are conducted throughout the year in a variety of weather conditions including rain, wind, summer heat and cold winter days. Testing begins in the early morning hours and continues through the early evening hours.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid South Carolina driver’s license and be at least 21 years of age with one year driving experience.
  • Must complete a nationwide criminal background check to include finger printing.
  • Before being certified to administer CDL knowledge skill tests must complete a formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination that includes Introduction to CDL Licensing System, Overview of the CDL Tests and Knowledge Tests.
