About the Role
Join the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as a License Examiner II in the Bluffton, SC branch office. This position offers a fast-paced, rewarding environment in public service, valuing teamwork, commitment, and excellent customer service.
Responsibilities
- Administer road test examinations for all vehicle classes:
- Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds, provided the GVWR of the vehicle being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.
- Class B: Any single unit vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such towing vehicle not exceeding 10,000 pounds.
- Class C: Any single unit vehicle or combination of vehicles that does not meet the definition of Class A or B but is designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or is placarded for hazardous materials.
- Class D: Passenger vehicles and all non-commercial vehicles not exceeding 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
- Class E: Non-commercial single unit vehicles and all non-commercial vehicles not exceeding 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
- Class F: Non-commercial combination vehicles exceeding 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
- Class M: Motorcycles.
- CDLs (if in a CDL office).
- Determine applicant’s physical and mental fitness and competency to safely operate motor vehicles.
- Administer written, oral, and automated examinations to assess applicant’s knowledge of laws and driving procedures.
- Perform pre-trip inspections on the general working condition of vehicles operated by applicants.
- Examine, accept, prepare, enter, and print all documents required for issuing driver licenses, beginner permits, and identification cards for all classes, including original, duplicate, transfers, temporary, and replacement documents.
- Process requests for repossessed, abandoned, salvaged, homemade, and rebuilt vehicles.
- Edit customer name and address fields.
- Process motor vehicle registration requests.
- Research suspension inquiries, modify driver International Registration Plan credentials, and issue automobile dealership licenses.
- Answer customer inquiries regarding driver, vehicle, registration, titling, and insurance requirements via phone and in person.
- Greet and direct customers to appropriate areas in the office.
- Collect required fees and donations for the Donate Life Fund.
- Reconcile and prepare individual daily reports and refund request documents.
- Compute vehicle sales taxes and make weight adjustments to the vehicle record file.
- Receive, code, and issue receipts for surrendered license plates; box surrendered plates and complete pickup requests.
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment.
- Fax and mail documents, and run errands for the branch office, including trips to the post office and making bank deposits.
Working Conditions
- Road tests are conducted year-round in various weather conditions, including rain, wind, summer heat, and cold winter days.
- Testing occurs during early morning and early evening hours.
- Work requires prolonged sitting and/or standing, walking, and constant talking.
- Exposure to outdoor temperatures and processing chemicals used in driver’s license development.
- May require relocation to an office within 30 miles of the home office if business needs arise.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid South Carolina driver’s license and at least 21 years of age with one year of driving experience.
- Completion of a nationwide criminal background check, including fingerprinting.
- Before being certified to administer CDL knowledge and skill tests, completion of a formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination covering:
- Introduction to the CDL Licensing System
- Overview of the CDL Tests
- Knowledge Tests
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with internal and external customers.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Thorough knowledge of driver licensing eligibility requirements.
- Application of DMV organizational competencies.
