About the role
The License Examiner II administers road test examinations for all classes of driver licenses at the North Augusta Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Branch Office in North Augusta, SC. This position evaluates applicants' skills and abilities to operate motor vehicles safely in various weather conditions and during early morning to early evening hours. The role involves both office and outdoor work, including prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and talking.
Responsibilities
- Administer road test examinations for all vehicle classes:
- Class A: Combination vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001+ pounds, towing over 10,000 pounds.
- Class B: Single unit vehicles with GVWR of 26,001+ pounds or towing under 10,000 pounds.
- Class C: Vehicles designed to transport 16+ passengers or placarded for hazardous materials.
- Class D: Passenger and non-commercial vehicles under 26,000 pounds GVWR.
- Class E: Non-commercial single unit vehicles under 26,000 pounds GVWR.
- Class F: Non-commercial combination vehicles over 26,000 pounds GVWR.
- Class M: Motorcycles (and CDLs if in a CDL office).
- Determine applicants' physical and mental fitness and competency to operate motor vehicles safely.
- Administer written, oral, and automated examinations on laws and driving procedures.
- Perform pre-trip inspections of applicant vehicles.
- Examine, accept, prepare, enter, and print documents for driver licenses, beginner permits, ID cards, vehicle registrations, license plates, permits, and titles (including repossessed, abandoned, salvaged, homemade, and rebuilt vehicles).
- Edit customer name and address fields.
- Process motor vehicle registration requests and research suspension inquiries.
- Modify driver International Registration Plan and registration credentials.
- Issue automobile dealership licenses.
- Answer customer inquiries about driver, vehicle, registration, titling, and insurance requirements via phone and in person.
- Greet and direct customers to appropriate office areas.
- Collect fees and donations for the Donate Life Fund.
- Reconcile and prepare daily reports and refund request documents.
- Compute vehicle sales tax and adjust vehicle record weights.
- Receive, code, and issue receipts for surrendered license plates; box plates and complete pickup requests.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Fax, mail documents, and run errands (e.g., post office, bank deposits).
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license and at least 21 years of age with one year of driving experience.
- Completion of a nationwide criminal background check, including fingerprinting.
- Completion of a formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination (required before administering CDL knowledge/skill tests).
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with internal and external customers.
- Excellent customer service skills and thorough knowledge of driver licensing eligibility requirements.
- Application of DMV organizational competencies.
- Willingness to relocate to an office within 30 miles of the home office if business needs require.
