About the Role

Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the unit, including reporting problems with building and grounds, performing inventory, and recommending equipment for purchase. Oversees staff management tasks such as interviewing, training, scheduling, supervising, and reviewing performance. Recommends selection, transfer, promotion, disciplining, and discharging of employees.

Keeps statistical records of unit activities and prepares reports. Prepares and monitors the unit budget. Performs collection development, including recommending materials for selection, preparing orders, and weeding damaged or outdated materials.

Attends monthly Branch Managers, Youth Services, Department Head, collection development, and database meetings, as well as relevant conferences, training, and workshops. Provides guidance to staff on bibliographic and computer-assisted services and assists patrons with material selection and informational needs. Conducts complex searches using the online catalog, databases, and print sources.

Represents the library system at schools, community groups, or professional associations. Plans and conducts tours and programs for adults or children. Recommends changes in policies and procedures. In the Youth Services Department, plans, conducts, and oversees story time, Summer Reading Club programs, and other youth-related activities.

Participates in emergency management activities during a local state of disaster as directed by county managers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform collection development: recommend materials, prepare orders, and weed outdated or damaged items.
  • Attend monthly meetings (Branch Managers, Youth Services, Department Head, collection development, and database).
  • Attend relevant conferences, training, and workshops.
  • Provide guidance to staff on bibliographic and computer-assisted services.
  • Assist library patrons with material selection and informational needs.
  • Conduct complex searches using the online catalog, databases, and print sources.
  • Represent the library system at schools, community groups, or professional associations.
  • Plan and conduct tours and programs for adults and children.
  • Recommend changes to policies and procedures.
  • Plan, conduct, and oversee Youth Services programs, including story time and Summer Reading Club.
  • Participate in emergency management activities during local disasters.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school.
  • Knowledge of current library practices and technologies.
  • 3 years of job-related experience post-MLS, with at least one year of management experience.
  • Computer skills, including proficiency with library databases and catalog systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Supervisory and organizational skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, employees, and elected officials.
  • Ability to complete assigned projects in a timely manner.

Pay

$32.26–$40.33 per hour.
