This position manages and supervises the information department of a regional library and the branch in the absence of the branch manager. Serves on the branch management team, responds to customer needs, resolves complex issues, and performs all essential information and support duties to further the goals and objectives of Fairfax County Public Library.
Responsibilities
- Identifies staff development needs and directs in-branch training programs.
- Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates subordinate personnel.
- Schedules staff and plans workflow to ensure adequate coverage.
- Oversees the management of the branch collection.
- Serves on Branch Management Team and as person-in-charge.
- Resolves non-routine patron interactions by communicating and interpreting library policy.
- Addresses complex reference and reader advisory services.
- Promotes and represents the Library System before outside groups.
- Develops informational finding tools and facilitates staff meetings.
- Answers informational and reference questions using print and electronic resources.
- Assists and instructs customers in the use of print and online materials and technology.
- Advises customers in the selection of books, periodicals, media, and other materials.
- Plans and provides programs and outreach to customers of all ages.
- Troubleshoots library computers and reports unresolved problems.
- Performs copy cataloging of library materials.
- Identifies materials for addition to the library collection.
- Remains current in resources, services, and technologies in the information field.
- Supervises volunteers.
- Assists regional branch manager in planning and directing activities of a regional library.
- Serves as acting branch manager in the absence of the branch manager.
- Coordinates information services and training for regional staff.
Requirements
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school.
- Two years of professional library experience, including one year in a supervisory capacity.
- Possession of a certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for Certification of Librarians within three months of appointment.
- Ability to analyze community needs and plan, develop, and conduct appropriate services.
- Ability to set goals and objectives, analyze information, and prepare reports.
- General knowledge of statistics and budget preparation.
- Ability to prioritize and schedule workload.
- Knowledge of library science principles, standards, and practices.
- Knowledge of library reference sources and methods.
- Ability to create or curate professional resources and manage the library’s collection.
- Ability to provide information service to customers of all ages.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with others.
- Knowledge of word processing and computer applications.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of the Library’s operating procedures.
- Ability to interpret Library policy for staff and the public.
- Ability to promote interest in library services and plan community-oriented programs.
- Ability to adapt to workplace change and classify and catalog material.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three or more years of library experience, including two or more years in a supervisory capacity.
- Demonstrated experience working at a public service desk and providing exemplary front-line customer service.
- Experience leading meetings or making presentations about the library.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer.
- Ability to lift up to 15 lbs.
- Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist, and shoulder movements.
- Ability to shelve materials at all height levels.
- Ability to stand for 2 hours at a time.
- Ability to stoop, bend, reach, squat, and kneel.
- Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County for coverage, meetings, and trainings.
- Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book bins filled at 90% capacity (20 lbs. initial force, 10 lbs. sustained).
- Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book carts filled at 70% capacity (14 lbs. initial force, 7 lbs. sustained).
Pay
Starting salary range: $72,125.46 – $96,167.14 (midpoint). Compensation rules apply per Fairfax County personnel regulations for current employees.
Schedule
Scheduling flexibility is required, including day and/or evening hours on weekdays and weekends. The schedule may vary based on library needs.
