About The Job

The University of Minnesota Office of the General Counsel has an exciting opportunity for a Legal Secretary/Legal Administrative Assistant. The work involves providing a full range of secretarial support to multiple attorneys and paralegals who work with the assigned attorneys.

Job Duties

  • Type, draft, edit and prepare legal court documents, such as pleadings, motions, affidavits, subpoenas, and correspondence.
  • Organize and track important case documents, including pleadings and voluminous discovery documents.
  • Perform electronic filing/e-filing with applicable courts and agencies.
  • Maintain electronic and physical files.
  • Communicate with attorneys and paralegals to provide information and coordinate cases.
  • Update and monitor complex calendars to meet court and statutory deadlines.
  • Ensure that concluded matters are completely recorded in the electronic document management system and disposed correctly of physical documents.
  • Produce and transmit requests for approval of Continuing Legal Education and professional development sessions; handle registration with sponsoring organization, recording of credits, and report to state board.
  • Make business travel arrangements, including professional conference registration, transportation and housing, and expense reimbursement requests.
  • Provide backup support for other support staff in the office with a teamwork approach.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of office work and/or education/training beyond high school, including a minimum of one year of litigation-support experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace.
  • Experience managing attorney calendars/scheduling.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately interact with a broad and diverse range of leadership, faculty, staff.
  • Experience working with a document management system.
  • Understanding of digital document formatting, local court rules, and electronic service (e-service) procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with employment/labor law and litigation concepts.
  • Labor and/or litigation experience working with employment disputes (through civil lawsuits, arbitrations and/or administrative agency charges).
  • Experience with Minnesota eFile and Serve.

Abilities/Skills/Knowledge

  • Understanding of federal and state litigation processes.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology, documents, and processes.
  • Work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Experience with confidential or sensitive information and situations necessitating considerable use of tact, discretion, professionalism.
  • Ability to handle time-sensitive projects while organizing and prioritizing work, with minimal supervision.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.

Pay And Benefits

Pay Range: $29.46 to $31.59 an hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
