About the role

The City of Worcester is seeking a Legal Administrative Specialist to join the fast-paced, high-volume, and collaborative Law Department. Under the direction of the Director of Administration & Operations and the City Solicitor, this position provides high-level executive functions and administrative services in support of the City Solicitor and the Law Department. Responsibilities

  • Perform contract management, research points of law, and write legal memoranda.
  • Prepare, review, and organize legal documents such as contracts and licenses.
  • Proofread, draft, and submit legal documents and court filings.
  • Process payments, payroll, and manage files, calendars, and meeting schedules.
  • Assist in technical support and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, or related field OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and five (5) years of experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Three (3) years of related experience as a legal secretary in a legal office setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience conducting legal research.
  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures.
  • Attention to detail and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws.
  • Knowledge of office routines, city rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of data processing, word processing, and basic bookkeeping.
  • Knowledge of investigative techniques for claims.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with the public.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle public complaints or inquiries.
  • Ability to answer telephones and greet visitors.
  • Ability to conduct non-complex legal research.
  • Ability to work professionally and cooperatively with the public, all levels of staff, and executive management.
  • Regular onsite attendance is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Paralegal Certificate.
  • Five (5) years of related experience providing customer service and/or clerical assistance in a legal office setting.
  • Two (2) years of experience conducting legal research.
  • Experience conducting research via Westlaw or other legal research software.
  • Experience using SharePoint and Team Dynamix.
  • Municipal law experience.
  • Claims adjuster or investigation experience.
