Lecturer Pool in School of Applied Health (Academic Year 26/27)

Cal Poly Humboldt’s School of Applied Health invites applications for its Temporary Faculty Pool. We offer hands-on, innovative learning through bachelor’s programs in Kinesiology, Recreation Administration, and Nursing; a master’s in Kinesiology; minors and certificates (including scientific diving); and an adapted physical-education curriculum that prepares teachers to work with children and youth with disabilities.

Qualifications

Health Education Courses

• Required: MS/MA in Health, Kinesiology, Health Education, Nutrition, or related field; successful teaching experience in health education; academic or professional work related to health promotion.
• Preferred: relevance of training/experience to specific course; coursework toward PhD in Kinesiology, Health Education, Nutrition, or related field; CHES certification or registered-dietitian license; successful university teaching experience.
• First Aid courses: First Aid/CPR instructor certificate and BA/BS in appropriate field with successful teaching experience in First Aid/CPR.

Kinesiology Courses

• Required: MS/MA in PE, Kinesiology, or related field; mastery in subject matter; successful teaching experience.
• Certain courses require an Athletic Training Certificate.
• Preferred: PhD in Kinesiology or related field (or significant progress toward one); relevance of training/experience to teach specific course; Elementary P.E. teaching experience or teaching certificate in Physical Education; 1–3 years of successful university teaching experience.
• For a limited number of courses, a BS/BA in PE, Kinesiology, or related field and successful teaching experience in the course content area may be accepted.

Recreation Administration Courses

• Required: MS/MA in Recreation, Leisure Studies, or closely related field; minimum one year of successful college or university teaching experience in the specific subject area of the course.
• Outdoor Recreation courses: current and recognized Wilderness First Responder and CPR/First Aid certifications; 30+ days of documented lead instructor/facilitator experience.
• Preferred: Leave No Trace trainer or higher; PhD, EdD, or significant progress toward a terminal degree (ABD) in Recreation, Leisure Studies, or closely related field; successful university/college teaching experience in recreation management (programming, legal issues, facility planning, financial management, supervision); experience developing and implementing experiential-education and service-learning courses; professional experience in related areas.

Additional Criteria for Specific Recreation Courses

• REC 302 Inclusive Recreation: degree in a disability-related field (therapeutic recreation, special education, disabilities studies) and demonstrated leadership of recreation programs for individuals with disabilities.
• REC 315 Travel Industry Management, REC 335 Tourism Planning and Development, REC 435 Sustainable Tourism: advanced degree in tourism-related field.
• REC 345 Environmental Education: ability to provide certification in Project Wet or Project Wild curriculum.
• REC 410 Community Recreation: experience working in community-based recreation programs, including collaborating across programs, departments, and agencies.
• REC 415 Leisure and Aging: experience working in recreation programs with older adults (community recreation, senior programs, supported living environments).
• REC 480 Leading Outdoor Activities – Paddlesports: valid Wilderness First Aid and CPR or higher certification from a recognized provider.
  • Flatwater kayaking: Level 2 ACA certification or higher; 30+ days leading flatwater kayak instruction.
  • Swiftwater kayaking: Swift Water Rescue certification; 30+ days leading swiftwater kayaking instruction.
  • Preferred: Waterfront lifeguard, California Division of Boating and Waterways, and/or Safe Boating Course Certificate.

Diving Courses

• Required: current active NAUI Open Water SCUBA Instructor certification; AAUS scientific diver certificate; current two-person CPR certification; NAUI authorization to certify the specific courses taught; DAN Oxygen Provider Instructor Certification; previous teaching experience for similar courses.
• Underwater Photography: fundamental knowledge of underwater scientific photography.
• Preferred: BS/BA; minimum two years actively teaching diving as an instructor; Humboldt leadership experience; teaching experience at a university level; demonstrated mastery of diving on the Northern California coast.

Physical Education Courses

• Required: BS/BA or appropriate training/certification for the activity being taught; demonstrated mastery/competency in the subject; successful teaching experience.
• Preferred: successful university teaching in the activity; MS/MA in PE or related field; relevant certification.

Nursing Courses

• Didactic courses: active/unrestricted California RN license; graduate degree from an accredited college or university at time of appointment.
• Preferred: graduate degree in nursing; experience/certification relevant to subject area(s)/teaching.
• Practicum courses: active/unrestricted California RN license; baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited college or university; significant experience in practicum area(s); one of the following:
  • enrolled in a graduate program,
  • completed relevant continuing education or graduate-level courses, or
  • hold relevant national certification.

Pay

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. Monthly base salaries for the Lecturer – Academic Year classification are:

• Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677
• Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224
• Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523

Appointees are typically placed at the beginning of the range. Full-time (15 units per semester) salaries are prorated to the number of units worked and paid in six monthly payments for each full semester. Explanation of the Distribution of Pay.
