About the role

The Department of Biological Sciences offers B.S., B.A., and MS degree programs as well as a Biotechnology Certificate program. The department has approximately 800 undergraduate majors, 50 MS students, 17 tenure-track faculty and 7 staff. Teaching resources available in the department include eleven laboratory classrooms, greenhouse facilities, and a natural history collections room. The B.S. in Biological Sciences includes a rigorous core sequence in biological sciences, including courses in chemistry, physics, selected mathematics and statistics courses. Within the B.S. degree, students can select a concentration in Physiology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Biomedical Lab Sciences, and Forensic Science. Additionally, the department offers a B.A. in Biological Sciences with concentration in Biology Education designed to prepare students careers in secondary science education.

Responsibilities

• Teaching major and non-major courses in Biology including Introductory Biology, Genetics, Developmental Genetics, Hematology, Microbiology and Human Physiology and Anatomy.
• Teaching assignments may include courses at the Hayward campus, Concord Center, and/or online.

Qualifications

• A Ph.D. degree in Biological Sciences or related field is required for these positions.
• For certain non-major courses only, the Ph.D. requirement may be waived, but M.S. is required.

Salary and Appointment

Rank and salary: Lecturer. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Position appointment is subject to budgetary authorization. The salary schedule information for the Lecturer - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

• Lecturer AY (Range 2) - $5,507 - $6,677
• Lecturer AY (Range 3) - $6,221 - $13,224
• Lecturer AY (Range 4) - $6,825 - $14,523
• Lecturer AY (Range 5) - $8,593 - $15,211

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.

Date of Appointment

Fall Semester begins August 17, 2026; Spring Semester begins January 19, 2027.
