About The Geological Sciences Department

The Geological Sciences Department provides high-quality education in Earth Science and its applications through hands-on learning, faculty-mentored research, and exposure to current technology. The department emphasizes understanding Earth system processes and their interrelationships, preparing students for careers in geosciences and related fields. Students choose from emphases in geology, geophysics/earth exploration, or environmental geoscience, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application through interdisciplinary fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and modern geospatial technologies.

About the role

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term runs from late August to mid-December, and the Spring term from mid-January to mid-May. Summer Session teaching opportunities may also be available.

We welcome applications from experienced, student-centered individuals to teach in the following subject areas: Oceanography, Meteorology, Engineering Geology, or Introduction to Geology.

Responsibilities

• Teach assigned division courses in the department’s curriculum.
• Serve weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load.
• Teach day, evening, and/or weekend courses in various modes (in-person, asynchronous, or synchronous).

Requirements

• A master’s degree in Geology or a related discipline relevant to the curriculum.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Geology or a related discipline (preferred).
• Prior teaching experience at the college or university level, with evidence of strong teaching (preferred).
• Industry experience (preferred).

Pay

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background. Most new appointees are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank and placed at the beginning of the range. The anticipated hiring range is up to $6,221 per month, depending on qualifications. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges are:

• Lecturer A: $5,507 - $6,677 per month
• Lecturer B: $6,221 - $13,224 per month
• Lecturer C: $6,825 - $14,523 per month
• Lecturer D: $8,593 - $15,211 per month

Initial appointments are for one semester only. Full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries are prorated to the number of units worked and paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
