EPO Overview

The Enterprise Physical Operations (EPO) department at WashU provides comprehensive operational, infrastructure, planning, and facility services supporting the university’s mission. EPO manages and supports 28 million gross square feet across 235+ buildings and associated infrastructure systems, ensuring safe, innovative, and efficient environments.

About the Role

Serves as the primary first responder to all life safety and property protection incidents on campus. Enforces university policies and criminal laws. May be assigned to vehicle, bike, or foot patrol. Acts as an informal leader and mentor.

Responsibilities

• Responds to or reacts to emergency and non-emergency incidents (medical, law enforcement, injury/accident, etc.) on campus.
• Patrols University properties when not on assignment.
• Takes action or makes notes for follow-up on safety and security issues.
• Supports Emergency Management during large-scale incidents.
• Compiles and investigates incident reports and conducts follow-up investigations.
• Apprehends criminal suspects for on-view or reported criminal activity.
• Fulfills informal leadership duties in the absence of supervisors and managers.
• Conducts building checks, checking access control devices, door locks, and looking for safety/security hazards.
• Uses problem-solving skills to resolve issues found during building checks.
• Assists Medical Center personnel and visitors with directions and provides escorts when requested.
• Partners with customers in assigned geographical areas and assists them in resolving multi-department issues.
• Takes possession of found property, attempts to locate the owner, and secures property according to established procedure.
• Enforces parking regulations and provides support to the Transportation Office as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Requires extensive safety training, exposure to blood-borne pathogens, chemicals, dust, dirt, grease, or disagreeable elements, exposure to animals, patient care setting, and alternative work schedules. Physical effort typically involves sitting at a desk or table, standing or walking, running and climbing, bending, crouching, stooping, repetitive wrist, hand, or finger movement, using tools requiring high dexterity, occasional lifting (25-50 lbs), and moving to on and off-campus locations. Equipment includes office equipment, simple hand tools, and personal weapons and protective devices.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• St. Louis Metropolitan Security License within 30 days of hire.
• Missouri Class E or Illinois Class D Driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
• Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) certification.
• Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) certification.
• Armed Security Officer experience in a professional security organization for at least 3 years.
