Large Animal Night ICU Veterinary Technician

About the role

The position involves providing basic and intensive nursing care to all patients of all services admitted for treatment to the Large Animal Clinic of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Technical assistance is provided to clinical faculty, residents, interns, and senior veterinary students concerning all aspects of patient care, animal handling, and the application and use of specialized diagnostic and medical equipment.

Responsibilities

• Work and/or be oncall for varying shifts, days of the week, weekends, and holidays.
• Aid in other areas as directed by the supervisor.
• Administer drugs and pharmaceuticals by all acceptable routes of administration to large animals.
• Operate, maintain, and apply medical equipment such as IV pumps, heart monitors, centrifuge, ultrasound, laser, endoscopes, hoists, slings, nebulizers, and glucometers.
• Maintain a safe environment for both humans and animals by making sound emergency decisions.
• Handle 75 pounds and perform tasks requiring long periods of standing, sitting, walking, reaching, bending, and pushing/pulling.
• Tolerate rabies prophylaxis as required.

Requirements

• Must be a Licensed Veterinary Technician.
• Effective communication skills, cooperative teamwork, and understanding of directions.
• Ability to understand and comprehend information and instructions.
• Knowledge of large animal anatomy, physiology, and etiology; CPR and animal restraint methods.
• Experience handling large farm animals and proficiency in medical equipment operation.
• Experience in a veterinary medical setting and large animal practice environment.
• Experience with veterinary software such as ezyVet and Vet Radar.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of basic nursing skills, veterinary pharmaceuticals, and sophisticated surgical, medical, and diagnostic equipment.
• Experience in large animal surgical and medical procedures, anatomy, etiology, and physiology.
• Ability to work well with others and individually in an academic setting.
